What do the Mountain Goats and the Hold Steady have in common, besides each other? Nasal-voiced lead singers, a lot to say, hyperdevoted fans. They’re the only two bands still making music that I really listen to anymore (Stephin Merritt is in time out for “We Are Having a Hootenanny.”). In “Girls Like Status,” there is the loving and sort of silly “It was song number three on John’s last CD, gonna make it through this year if it kills me” (On a tangent, the HS show at the El Rey a few weeks ago was fine, but fans, “You Can Make Him Like You” is ironic.), and you’ll hear a funny “Dance Music” cover here if you can scrounge up a UK postal code. As far as I know, above is the only Mountain Goats cover of a Hold Steady song, and it’s from last summer’s Farm Sanctuary (via Jesse). (On another tangent, while I was digging around to try to confirm that, I came across this alleged repeated JD quote: “As you all know, I don’t write songs about myself,” which I have never heard before, but is anyway relevant to ME [which is what we’re TALKING about here].)
